Spring term 2017

Our Theme this first half term is: Once there were giants!

Happy new year!

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas holiday and are refreshed and revived, ready for a jam-packed Spring term, filled with lots of learning. Our theme for the first half term is 'Once there were giants!', attached to this news letter is further information on the learning we will be covering this term. In the second half term our learning theme changes to 'Terrific Transformations ', look out in your child's home learning file for information about this theme just before the February half term.

belreadReading with your child.

Your child will receive two reading books each week, these books can be changed when ever your child is ready to do so. All your child needs to do is simply say to an adult that their have read their books and need to change them. The adult who has been asked will then check in the reading diary and ask your child questions about the book they have read before allowing them to select new books. Please continue to try and read with your child as much as possible and let us know how they are getting on by writing a quick note in their reading diary.
Children should be reading 4/5 times a week, these do not need to be lengthy session and can consist simply of reading 3-5 pages.Encourage your child to read a range of texts at home, such as magazines, food packets, instructions, cook books, newspapers and websites. Children who read regularly for enjoyment and a purpose are more confident readers, with better understanding. If you find it hard to read at home, you are more than welcome to come into school at 3:00pm each day to read with your child.

Pen Licencebelpen

Many Pen Licences were awarded last term to children in our class. These children may now use a handwriting pen in all of their writing. I hope to hand out more pen licences soon to children who show consistently neat and well formed handwriting.

Home learning

Attached to this news letter is information about the choices of home learning to be completed this first half term. Together with your child, select the home learning you wish to do and complete it by due date stated on the sheet. If you are unsure about any of the home learning, need resources or further information please come and talk to me.

Your child will receive maths home learning linked to the maths unit being covered that week in class. This will be sent home every Tuesday and Thursday and expected back in the next day. It is designed to take 5/10 minutes. Children are expected to independently complete section A and should be able to complete section B in this time. They may even be able to complete section C. Children will continue to have a times table test each Friday.
In addition it would greatly benefit your child to spend 5 minutes a day practising mental maths skills, such as times tables, doubling, halving and number bonds to 10 and 100. Perhaps use your journey to and from school or the time when dinner is cooking to ask, answer and explain maths questions. These mental maths skills underpin all that we do in maths and by practising them daily you will really help to strengthen your child as a mathematician.

Each Monday your child will come home with spellings to learn, they will be tested on these spellings in school on the following Monday. To aid your child's learning of these spellings they will also have a small activity sent home. They will be expected to be able to spell these words in their day to day writing in joined up handwriting.

Our P.E lessons this term, we will be on a Monday and Wednesday. I would continue to be grateful if PE kits could be in school all week from Monday morning and go home Friday afternoon. If your child does not have their PE kit then they will not participate in the lesson. With the colder weather approaching please remember children may bring jogging bottoms/ leggings and a jumper to enable us to do as many PE lessons as possible outside.

belgreek1Ancient Greek day

As our History this half term is Ancient Greece in Key Stage Two we will be having a theme day later in the half term. Children are invited to come to school that day dressed as an ancient Greek. A letter with more information will be sent out closer to the day.belgreek2
